Nomenclatural History
The genus Lactobacillus was originally proposed by Beijerinck 1901. This name appeared on the Approved Lists of Bacterial Names 1980. This name was placed onto the nomina taxorum conservanda by Judicial Opinion 38 in 1971. Cai et al. published an emended description of this genus in 2012. Subsequent emendations were proposed by Rogosa in 1974 and Haakensen et al. in 2009. Haakensen et al. transferred the members of Leisner et al. 2000 into this genus in 2011.
